5 Things to Look for When Buying a Retirement Home

As retirement draws closer we often start to look for a home to spend our golden years in. According to an AARP study, 89% of homeowners over 45 want to age in place. For Sarasota, there’s no shortage of amenities and pastime activities to try out. But when you begin searching for a new home in the area, there are extra factors to consider than a typical home buyer would. As you look to improve your home buying experience, here are some things you should consider in your next home purchase:

1. The Yard

We all love beautiful yards, but one thing to keep in mind is the amount of maintenance required. Sarasota residents love highlighting their palm trees and elegant shrubbery. Some even take up small gardens and use them to pick herbs from. However, will keeping up with the yard become a headache in the next 5-10 years? As retirees become less mobile, it becomes harder to maintain the property’s curb appeal.

2. Safety & Security

Protection and security become bigger concerns as we age. A majority of retirement communities and luxury neighborhoods in Sarasota offer gated entryways and feature security systems to help protect residents. Nonetheless, it’s important to note how well lit streets are and see which security systems are featured in the home you’re looking to buy.

3. The Bathroom

The bathroom is one of the top places in the home where accidents occur. Possible amenities you might want to look for include large bathrooms, walk-in showers, and sufficient lighting. If the home you want doesn’t have these features, make sure there is enough space to navigate around in the bathroom. What you do want to consider is the ability to add appliances or safety features should they ever become necessary.

4. Doors & Hallways in the Home

Pay close attention to the handles on doors, cabinets, and faucets. Lever handles are much easier to use than knobs. If these need replacement in the future, consider this in the cost when you look to buy the home. Also, don’t overlook the width of doorways and halls. Is there enough room to easily navigate through them? Does the floor have any trip hazards that might be a problem in the future.

5. Additional Features to Consider

Additional features you might want to consider include 1st-floor master bedrooms, step-less entryways, and island work areas. These features just add relative ease to your home experience in Sarasota, FL.
